Waterloo Region and Wellington County
Excavation Service Areas Around Cambridge, Ontario
Fennex Cambridge Excavation Pros is based in Cambridge and takes on excavation work anywhere within about a 30-minute drive of our yard. That radius covers most of Waterloo Region and the southern part of Wellington County, including Guelph.
Each community below links to a page about local soils, permits and the work we do most there. If your property sits near the edge of our area, call us with the address and we will confirm.
Waterloo Region
Waterloo Region is our home territory, and most of our work happens in its three cities and surrounding townships. The whole region drains to the Grand River, so grading or filling near rivers, creeks, wetlands and floodplains can need a Grand River Conservation Authority permit.
Digging in a municipal road allowance, such as for a new sewer or water connection, also needs approval from the city or the Region of Waterloo.
Cambridge
Our home base, made up of the former communities of Galt, Preston and Hespeler, where the Speed River meets the Grand. See our Cambridge excavation page for local soils and permits.
Kitchener
The region's largest city, with older homes near downtown and newer subdivisions on its south and west sides. Our Kitchener excavation services cover basements, walkouts, servicing and more.
Waterloo
A university city with a steady stream of infill and redevelopment projects. Learn about excavation in Waterloo, including digging over the sand and gravel of the Waterloo Moraine.
Woolwich Township
North of Waterloo, covering Elmira, St. Jacobs, Breslau and the farmland between them. Our Woolwich Township excavation page covers rural lots, septic work and new builds.
Wilmot Township
West of Kitchener, including New Hamburg, Baden and Petersburg, with the Nith River running through New Hamburg. See excavation in Wilmot Township for local details.
Wellington County
North and east of Cambridge, our service area reaches into Wellington County, which surrounds the City of Guelph and includes rural townships such as Puslinch and Guelph/Eramosa. The County has a forest conservation by-law that regulates tree cutting in larger woodlands, so clearing on big rural lots should be checked before machines arrive.
Most rural properties here rely on private wells and septic systems. That affects how we route trenches, where we stockpile soil and how far we keep fuel from a wellhead.
Guelph
A city that draws its drinking water from groundwater, built over Guelph Formation dolostone, with its own Site Alteration By-law for fill and grade changes. Our Guelph excavation page explains how those rules affect your project.
Puslinch
The rural township between Cambridge and Guelph, including Aberfoyle and Morriston, and home to the Arkell Spring Grounds and Carter Wellfield that supply much of Guelph's water. See excavation in Puslinch for septic permits and rural lot work.
Other Communities Within 30 Minutes
We also work in communities that do not have their own page yet. If your town sits within about 30 minutes of Cambridge, we can likely help.
Ayr and North Dumfries
Ayr is the main village in North Dumfries Township, just south of Cambridge along the Nith River. We take on foundation digs, septic excavation, driveways and grading for homes and farms across the township.
Rockwood and Guelph/Eramosa
Rockwood is the largest community in Guelph/Eramosa Township, east of Guelph. The township requires a site alteration permit when grade changes by more than 10 cm (about 4 in.), so we plan grading and fill work there around that rule.
Local Rules That Shape Excavation Work Here
Four sets of rules come up on almost every excavation job in this area. Each one affects your schedule, so we account for them in the quote.
- Ontario One Call: free utility locates are required by law before any digging, and standard requests can take up to five business days.
- Conservation authorities: the GRCA regulates development, grading and filling near watercourses, wetlands and hazard lands under O. Reg. 41/24.
- Municipal permits: building, site alteration and road occupancy permits come from your city or township, and the rules differ between them.
- Excess soil: Ontario's excess soil regulation, O. Reg. 406/19, controls where excavated soil can go, and larger projects may need sampling before soil leaves the site.
Not Sure If We Cover Your Address?
Send us your address and a short description of the job, and we will confirm whether it falls inside our service area. We will also tell you which local rules are likely to apply to your project.
